How your paint dries depends on weather conditions and temperature at the time of application. That’s why you have to do the work when the weather is warm so that your paint job turns out perfectly.
If the siding needs a lot of scraping, wood filling, cleaning and caulk replacement, the prep time might be as long as the paint time. Here’s an idea of the timeframe you can expect for a crew of 2 or 3 people. ½-day to two days: Scraping, filling, patching, caulking, if needed ½-day: House washing, if needed, possibly followed by a day or two to allow the siding to dry 1-2 days: Priming, if done separately, plus dry time overnight 1-2 days per coat: Painting

Josh, some great work on the renovation, it’s come up really nicely! It’s good to see you stressing the importance of not taking short cuts when it comes to prepping and removing wallpaper. It definitely does lead to more problems down the road when done incorrectly. However there is a caveat on that. If the wallpaper is in good condition and you have primed it properly, you can get away with painting over wallpaper. On a few jobs where the client has been on a tight budget, we have used an oil based primer to really seal the adhesive and keep then moisture from the paint away. Has worked well and we haven’t got any call backs. But I’d still agree with you and always push for stripping back wallpaper where possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as the saying goes. Also, would love to see how your painted popcorn ceilings came up. We call it ‘vermiculite’. Its quite old school and we come across it in school jobs and old buildings occasionally. Jake Beals May 09, 2020
When applying a coat of paint on the exterior, professional painters will look at other larger issues that you might not have noticed. With time, mold, mildew, rotting wood, and water stains can begin to eat into your walls, and regular painting will reveal such damages before they become apparent.
Another great tutorial. You guys really put out some great and helpful posts. I was especially happy to see that you kept the popcorn ceiling! I feel like there is so much pressure to get rid of your popcorn ceiling if you have it, but it is so expensive especially if you have asbestos. It is really such a minor thing I don’t think it should get as much flak as it does. Besides, I am convinced if I wait long enough, the popcorn ceilings will make a comeback;)
Even when you use masking tape, getting a perfect edge sometimes seems impossible. When you pull of the masking tape, some of the new paint comes with it. Wait until the paint dries thoroughly and use a knife to cut along the edge of the tape as you pull it off.
Most contractors charge between $25 and $50 an hour but can go up to as much as $100 an hour depending on the job. This will also change if you are hiring for a larger job. Some contractors will bring along help from other trades. This will add to the overall cost as too.
Always be sure to prep your roller and brushes before painting. You don’t want brush lint or bristles on your walls. And don’t forget to tape!
Paint is one of the lower costs involved with painting the exterior of your home. One gallon of paint will cover approximately 100 square feet of surface area. The type of paint purchased will also be reflected in the overall cost of the project. Inexpensive paints can be obtained for $21 a gallon while better quality products can top out at $70 per can. This means that a home that is 2,400 square feet will require a minimum of 24 cans of paint. However, if a light shade is selected to cover a darker hue, the house may require a second coat which would raise the price a lot.
Spraying is usually better for large homes because you can cover more surface faster.
Be sure to use a stain-blocking primer in high-humidity and high-moisture rooms, such as the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room to reduce the chance of the paint flaking, peeling, bubbling or blistering.
The idea of starting our own painting academy began as a way to formalize our own in-house training. We are constantly training our employees in the latest products and techniques that will improve the experience and outcome for our customers. However, Sheldon Stewart noticed while reviewing W-2’s at tax time that some of his Crew Leaders were making some pretty good money, like $40,000, $50,000, $60,000 a year! In … Continue Reading
