Our team of painters did a great job on the exterior of our 2-storey house. Luis, Simon, and Pancho were courteous, detailed, friendly, communicative, careful, clever, and did amazing work perched upon very tall ladders for 10 days. The office team were also responsive and friendly. I'd recommend them to you.

A wildly popular exterior dark gray house color is Sherwin Williams Peppercorn (SW 7674). While it can look dark in a fan deck or as a paint swatch, this gray lightens up on exteriors that get lots of natural sunlight. This rich, modern color is a trend-worthy option for cedar shake siding that has staying power.
Most jobs we do are 2 story, stucco repaints with wood eaves, and fascia boards. Occasionally, there is accent siding at the front of the house and a wood patio cover. A typical job takes my crew of 3 professional painters 4-5 days to complete.

Luckily, you don’t necessarily need to replace your siding. A fresh coat of paint is a great way to update the exterior of a home. Exterior painting typically costs $1,500 – $4,000 for a 1,000 square foot single story home and can cost $2,500 – $5,000 for a two story home. Many spend about $2,500 to hire a contractor to complete the project. It’s essential that you conduct a maintenance check on the condition of your siding before you can come to an informed decision. If any of it is warped or cracked, you should repair these sections before proceeding to paint. If you’re preparing to paint your siding and notice some flaws in its overall construction, you should learn more about the price of new siding and the cost of siding repairs before investing in any paint. This way, you’ll know that your budget can cover the essential maintenance required before you dive into painting. Once you’ve addressed any problems you may have with your siding and have fixed it up so that it is in good condition, the next step is to figure out how to go about painting it. One of the first questions many homeowners ask in this regard is how much it will actually cost. There are many factors to consider in this respect, but let’s look at paint cost first.
Follow these steps to prepare the exterior and create an ideal surface for a long-lasting paint job: Cover surrounding plants and water features with drop cloths. Remove them daily to prevent damaging the plants. Hand clean or pressure wash all paintable surfaces. Scrape off loose and flaking paint and fill any holes or dents with caulk. Repair and sand any damaged siding. Remove old caulk from windows and door trim and replace with paintable exterior caulk. Allow all surfaces to dry. Prime bare areas or the entire surface if needed. Allow each coat to dry before painting the next coat. HomeGuide Exterior Painting Pro Survey - 48 Professionals. (2021). Craftsman National Estimator Cloud. (2021). Q: I’ve been hearing a lot about low-VOC and no-VOC paints. What are they? Should I consider using them? A: VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that emit potentially harmful gasses when applied and over time. Paint, lacquer, varnish, paint thinners and paint strippers often contain these chemicals. In recent years, paints with lower concentrations of these toxic compounds have become available. There are also some paint brands that offer products with no VOC content. These natural paints and finishes are durable, cost effective and less harmful. Talk with your painting contractor and ask if they are familiar with low-VOC paints and whether they would recommend them for your home.

You will need to decide if you will be OK with cratering, ridges and different levels of paint under the final product. It is common to just scrape the loose paint off leaving an alligator skin effect on your final painting surface. You can see an extreme example of this in the picture below.

Once you have the approximate square footage, it’s time to calculate how many gallons of paint you’ll need. A gallon of paint will cover between 250 and 400 square feet. However, you’ll need more paint if the surface is rough, porous, or if the color you’re covering is darker than the new color.
