There are a few types of primer. They are directly related to the type of paint you will use and the surface you are painting. Oil-based primers are good for painting on wood and work with both oil- and latex-based paints. They help prevent stains from bleeding through the new paint. Oil-based primers cost between $25 and $70 a gallon. Latex-based primers are good for drywall and work with latex paints. They can cover and seal small stains.
