Since we don’t all live in single-family homes, let’s talk about the costs to paint by type of residence.
SANTA ROSA — When Mike Chavez was introduced to the painting trade by the father of a friend, he had little idea he was being primed for a permanent profession. “My buddy’s dad was a painter, and I worked for him during the summers in high school,” he recounts. “I remember leaving a jobsite one day, looking over the finished product as I drove away, and feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride. After high school, I worked for a couple of different painting contractors until I decided to get my license and start my own business.” .
So far, our exterior painting costs have covered supplies and tools. Let’s consider estimated labor costs for those that plan to hire a paint contractor for the work.
Before you stand back and marvel at this huge DIY accomplishment, you’ll need to clean up the worksite. Remove painter’s tape, scrape any paint off of windows, and clean tools and brushes. Seal paint cans by cleaning the inner ring, placing the lid back on the paint can, and gently hammering around the lid’s perimeter with a rubber mallet.

It’s recommended to put aside 1% of the purchase price of your home annually to cover future repairs, including painting. To save on painting costs, consider these tips: Only paint accent walls to change the look of a room at a fraction of the cost. Do the prep work yourself, such as moving furniture, dusting and cleaning the walls, removing outlet covers, and laying drop cloths. Do the cleanup yourself, such as removing the drop cloths, and moving everything back into place. Combine multiple painting projects at once to get a bulk rate discount. Let contractors buy the paint since they get it cheaper and typically stick to high-quality paints that last longer.
With every coat of paint, we not only add color to your exteriors but also offer them a second quote of security from elements, by suggesting the right type of paint type according to the climate.

Is black the new neutral? Black houses are certainly on the rise, and there’s no denying their chic appeal. But you may want to consider these cons before crossing over to the dark side: First, black houses absorb more heat from the sun than white houses. And black fades faster than lighter colors. It’s the responsibility of the contractors to use the best quality paints and the best possible painting techniques. But you play a big part in the success of your new paint, too. Here are a few simple steps you can take to be a good customer when hiring a Sonoma County painting company. Be clear and upfront with the company representative. Let them know what you want from your new paint job, the long-term outcome you’re expecting and specific ways they can satisfy your expectations. Before you hire a painting contractor, restate your expectations and goals, and reiterate to the painting representative your understanding of the agreement. Most problems occur because of a breakdown in communication. By being clear about your expectations and theirs, you can avoid most conflicts. Ask your contractor if you should call to check on the progress or if he will call you with updates. Be sure your service representative has a phone number where they can reach you at all times. The work will move along more smoothly if the company can reach you for any necessary updates, questions or work authorizations. When your contractor contacts you, return calls promptly to keep the painting on schedule.
Oil-based paints take longer to dry than latex, but they ultimately stand up to scratches and water damage better. For this reason, people often choose to use oil paint in high-moisture areas.
