Interior House Painting - How To Paint Walls & Ceilings Jeremy Holderness
.
Estimate the size of the house body by measuring the perimeter of the house. Then, measure the height of the house from the foundation to the roofline, excluding gables. Multiply the perimeter of the home by the height. TIP: For a more accurate estimate, subtract doors and windows from your wall area calculation. An average window is 15 square feet and an average door is 20 square feet.
*The amount of paint needed depends on how many coats you need to apply, the porousness of the wall surface, and the paint quality.

Painting the interior of an apartment can cost anywhere between $1,500 and $4,800. Many people living in apartments are renting, which can make it feel like there are limited options when it comes to redecorating. However, most landlords will be fine with you painting your apartment as long as you change it back before you move out.
Before you stand back and marvel at this huge DIY accomplishment, you’ll need to clean up the worksite. Remove painter’s tape, scrape any paint off of windows, and clean tools and brushes. Seal paint cans by cleaning the inner ring, placing the lid back on the paint can, and gently hammering around the lid’s perimeter with a rubber mallet.
Finally, holding your brush perpendicular to the adjacent surface, you'll want to feather out the line you just applied so there is no paint build-up. Ideally your cut line should be about 2" - 3" wide so you don't have to get too close to your corners with the roller cover.
I just bought an older house and I’m starting to get overwhelmed with big projects such as painting! Thanks for all the helpful advice Beth February 25, 2015
Kelly Brothers painted our garage floor with an epoxy product. The job was done very professionally with the crew working efficiently while being very personable. They obviously take pride in their work. The cost was very competitive. The end result looks great.
If you’re splurging on great paint, you definitely don’t want to pinch pennies on the application. Good brushes and roller covers give excellent coverage so that you don’t waste time and paint on re-application, and high-end painter’s tape is the real deal when it comes to sealing out drips and blurs. The more texture your walls have, the thicker the nap you’ll want on your roller cover so that it can reach into crevices and give complete coverage. But if you go too thick, you might actually create texture where you don’t want it, so be prepared to give your salesperson details about what you’re painting. You will never regret the time you spend covering floors, furniture, and hardware before you begin a paint project. Drop cloths are a must, and small plastic sandwich bags secured with tape are an easy way to protect doorknobs. Paint-and-primer combinations are fine if you already have a clean, smooth surface, but if there are any issues with the wall or it’s been more than eight years since you last painted, bite the bullet and go with a separate primer. If you need to cover an especially challenging surface (say, glass or high-gloss paint), use a bonding primer such as Benjamin Moore’s Insl-x Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer or Get your salesperson to help you with a realistic estimate of how much paint you’ll really need so that you can buy it all at once. Then, instead of using one gallon at a time, combine all the paint into one large container and mix it thoroughly. This is known as “boxing” your paint, and it keeps your color consistent from beginning to end. Today’s premium paints flow on easily, and you’ve already chosen a good roller cover (right?), so there’s no need to use much pressure. Be sure to use an extension pole so you can reach the maximum amount of area with the least effort — and without straining your back. After you’ve cut in your edges at the ceiling and baseboard using a brush, use your roller to apply paint from the ceiling downward. Amateurs often have telltale drips and spatters at the end of a paint job, but pros paint right over their mistakes as they work their way down the wall. Once an area starts to dry, it’s best to leave it alone. Going back over it can leave marks and color streaks in the paint’s surface.
If it has been a while since you last painted, chances are, your home is in need of a new paint job. Homeowners face common issues, such as cracking in the stucco, discoloration, peeling, flaking, and chipping of the outer layer. If you live in an area such as Daly City, San Francisco, Marin County, Oakland, or anywhere else in the Bay Area, your home deals with weathering. Throughout the year, your home faces different extremes of weathering. The Bay Area is a place where houses can experience a huge range of environmental conditions. Over time, this can wear down even the sturdiest of houses, causing aesthetic losses which make the house appear aged.
If you want part-time or occasional work, look for real estate investors who need a painter for a few days now and then, or offer your services to friends and acquaintances on weekends. If you see a fixer-upper being painted, stop and ask if they need help. Once you work with other painters, they can tell you who else is hiring.

We’re currently flipping a house from the late 60s. We stripped popcorn ceilings ourselves in the entire house, re-textured every ceiling and wall, replaced all of the trim, and repainted every surface. We painted the ceilings with a roller extension- it was by far my least favorite part of renovations so far- so much easier if you do it before flooring is in though! I can’t wait to see more posts on the house! Such a neat project! Emily @ Life on Food February 25, 2015
