My house was a 70s build, and almost completely wallpapered with a lot of the wallpaper painted over, which definitely didn’t help in removing it all! I also had a slightly different problem with removing wallpaper – the previous owners had used vinyl wallpaper, which when steamed stretched a lot rather than scraping off easily. It was easier to just score and scrape or peel off the paper dry, and later steam off any papery bits that were left on the wall.

Aside from the size of your home, there are many other factors that can affect paint job costs. For example, if you decide to do the paint job yourself, you’ll be spending less than you would if you hire professional services. Professional painters commonly charge a fixed rate for exteriors, which is based on the square footage. For interiors, they tend to charge by the hour and the standard price is $50 per hour. The price may vary depending on the nature of the project, the size, location, season, and their level of experience.

Flat paint, aka matte paint, falls on the other end of the spectrum. Matte paint has no shine at all, and it’s difficult to clean without rubbing off the paint because water removes it easily.
You don't have to spend years building painting skills just to paint your own house.
Always be sure to prep your roller and brushes before painting. You don’t want brush lint or bristles on your walls. And don’t forget to tape!
Avoid storing paint in places that experience extreme high or low temperatures. If you need to dispose of leftover primer or paint, contact your local township or county for proper disposal guidelines.
Wanting the job started or completed quickly can alter the price as well. Any professional painting contractor is likely already booked for the near future. If not, you may want to ask why? If you are asking the contractor to squeeze your project between or ahead of others, you are almost always asking for a larger price. In business, everything has a premium!
In comparison, a professional paint job for a house of the same size would cost around $5,420 based on the national average price per square foot. Your savings would be significant, but remember that many experts don’t recommend exterior painting as a DIY project.
Many factors impact the cost to paint the inside of a house, including how many rooms you’re painting, the size of each room, the type of paint you use, and more. The average range most people pay to paint the interior of a home is $7,500 to $10,000, with most homeowners paying around $8,700 to paint the interior of an average 2,500 sq.ft. home. However, some people pay as low as $450 to paint a single room ranging from approximately 300 to 400 sq.ft. or as high as $16,000 to paint a 4,000 sq.ft. home with custom applications.
