The average cost to paint a 2-story house is $2,000 to $10,500 or 25% to 50% more than a single-story home. Multi-story homes require more paint and supplies, prep work, labor, and ladders or scaffolding. A scaffolding permit adds $100 to $300. Cost plays a role in any home improvement project, including house painting. To determine what’s most economical, you should get at least three professional exterior home painter quotes that include a detailed explanation of what’s part of the contract.
In addition, if the color seems too overwhelming for all four of your walls, consider leaving one wall painted that color as an accent. You may find that a ‘pop’ of color is all you needed.
If you are paying for your painting project per square foot, the costs vary between interior and exterior projects. The average painting cost per square foot for exterior painting projects ranges from $1.50 to $4. For interior painting, you can expect to pay between $2 and $6. Generally speaking, interior projects will be more expensive due to the complexity of the project. Even though exterior paint costs more than interior, it is more difficult to prep, paint, and clean rooms of various shapes and sizes versus the entire outside of a house. That’s why the overall cost is more per square foot.

There were a couple things that needed to be done before I even started thinking about painting. Since the house was built in 1921, I wanted to check for lead. You can find lead testers in any home improvement store. I followed the directions on the label, did some tests, and found that the house was lead free! That was a relief because removing lead is a huge hassle, requiring professionals, special suits, and more tests. No thank you. If you do happen to test for lead and it shows positive, you can contact the national lead hotline, which should get you on the right track for proper removal. Fortunately we were able to bypass that entire process.
