The primary difference between the cost of interior paints ($10 to $70 per gallon) and exterior paints ($15 to $80 per gallon) is the resin. The resins used in exterior paints are softer, making them resistant to flaking, chipping, and sun damage. The interior paint uses a more rigid resin that resists marking and staining. Many exterior paints use a resin that causes outgassing, an emission of volatile organic compounds. Common to many manufactured products, it is what causes that “new car smell.” The outgassing from exterior paint resins continues for many years, even after the odor dissipates. It is a major reason professionals don't use or allow homeowners to use exterior paints indoors.
Labor and material costs vary from project to project, so house size isn’t the only thing that affects your overall price. Different kinds of paint will cost more or less per gallon, certain contractors will charge higher hourly rates, and the material of your siding will determine how much paint you have to use.

Thanks to easy-to-follow YouTube tutorials, DIY culture is thriving these days. Go ahead and put up that wall shelf, swap out your faucet, and paint the walls yourself—you’ll likely save a lot of money going the DIY route—but when it comes to painting the outside of your house, it’s best to hire pros. That’s because they can often get the best deals on paint (a cost savings), already have all the equipment required, and, well, they’re pros. Painting your house, especially if it’s a multistory house, is exacting, physically demanding, and sometimes dangerous work.
Outside of work, Mike engages in a variety of activities, from hanging out with his fiancée, Amanda, to running and playing softball. “I love barbecuing and spending time with friends and family,” he says. “I also play in a coed softball league and like to go running in Annadel State Park.” When he’s not at home or out amongst nature, Mike likes playing the bass guitar and attending concerts and Giants games in San Francisco.
Are you living with boring white walls, but hate the thought of painting? Painting is often a task that homeowners dread. However, it is one of the most inexpensive ways to improve the look of your home without too much effort.
Prior to talking with local painters in person or over the phone, you’ll want to decide on the details of your upcoming painting project. For example, have an idea of the areas you want painted, the color scheme you’re looking for and the timeline you want. Think about these questions to get you started: Which areas of my home need to be painted (i.e. interior room painting, exterior painting, kitchen painting, bedroom painting, new paint throughout the house)? Are there any changes or repairs I’d like to have made before the contractors start the job (such as repairing moulding and trim, patching wall damage, texturizing walls, or installing new windows and doors)? Do I want to stick with the same basic color scheme, or do I want bold paint or a drastic color change? Do I plan to live in this home long-term? Or is this a house I plan to sell or a rental property? What personal and professional characteristics would I like my Sonoma County painting contractor to have? Multiply the length by the width by the height of the room, then subtract windows, doors and cabinets as those will not require paint (l x w), add or subtract the ceilings, trim, and baseboards (dependent on if you want them painted).
Allow your first coat of paint to dry completely. According to Behr, you’ll need to wait at least two hours in between coats. Don’t be tempted to reuse paint-covered brushes or rollers. Start fresh to ensure your second coat goes on as smoothly as the first.
If you do call references on your own, ask for a list of the company’s 10 most recent customers. This will help avoid them giving you the names of only customers they know were satisfied. What type of painting did they do for you (interior or exterior painting, single room painting, faux finishing, ect.) Did the contractor keep you up-to-date with the status of the project? Or did you have to call in order to get information? If you live in a smaller town such as Penngrove, Fulton, Roseville, Fort Bragg or in West County, did they charge extra to travel to your home?
