To determine the number of coats your project requires, first examine the surface you'll be painting. A porous, rough, textured or previously unpainted surface will generally require more paint, as will a project that involves a dramatic color change. TIP: If you choose a deep, intense color, you may need multiple coats or even a tinted primer for the best results. Less paint may be needed if your color change is subtle, or your home has many "unpaintable" features such as window panes or decorative stone.
Painting a home’s exterior is a fast, affordable way to dramatically change its appearance. Paint can be applied to almost any siding, so it’s a versatile option too. On wood and fiber cement siding, paint is more than just aesthetic. It also protects the siding from moisture damage. The downside of painting is that it must be repeated every three to ten years depending on climatic conditions where you live and the type of siding beneath. The upside is that it really freshens up a home and gives you the opportunity to change its look more frequently than with other exterior options.

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot about low-VOC and no-VOC paints. What are they? Should I consider using them? A: VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that emit potentially harmful gasses when applied and over time. Paint, lacquer, varnish, paint thinners and paint strippers often contain these chemicals. In recent years, paints with lower concentrations of these toxic compounds have become available. There are also some paint brands that offer products with no VOC content. These natural paints and finishes are durable, cost effective and less harmful. Talk with your painting contractor and ask if they are familiar with low-VOC paints and whether they would recommend them for your home.

The material of your home’s exterior dictates your overall house painting approach. This includes taking care of repairs and calculating the amount of paint needed. For example, does your aluminum siding have dents or excessive “chalking” (a powdery coating)? Is your vinyl siding buckling? How much paint will you need for porous surfaces such as brick or stucco? Understanding the potential challenges upfront will aid in your decision about who will do the painting work.
Ready to hire a professional? Your next step is to choose a painter. Avoid selecting a painter based on price alone. Be sure to confirm the project length, the number of workers on the job, if the painter is licensed and insured, and what prep and clean up work will be completed by the paint company.
But every old home needs maintenance, updates or a refresh every few years or so. Paint is one of the best ways to give an old home new life while still retaining the integrity of the home. Painting an old home, however, is often accompanied by its own set of challenges which can range from small (tricky corners and trim) to large (replacing and repairing damaged walls or wood).
Because I used to be a teacher in the past life, I know how to make house painting simple.
Peppercorn is a crisp gray paint shade with slight red and blue undertones. Because of this, it works amazingly as a primary shade for homes with red front doors or brick chimneys. Again if you choose Peppercorn as an exterior paint color, make sure your house receives plenty of light.
The cost will vary a lot depending on who you decide to hire to do the job. There are lots of companies out there who tout great results but end up providing sub-par work.

A fresh coat of paint on your home won’t look its best if there are underlying issues such as buckled siding, rotting wood, or warped trim. Complete all pre-paint repair work, including snapping loose siding into place, fully replacing wood pieces, or repairing small wood blemishes with wood putty.
A 1,000 sq.ft. home generally consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a blended dining room and kitchen. If you’re planning on painting the interior of your home, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $4,000. An exterior paint job for the same size house costs between $1,500 to $3,500. With that being said, the typical cost of painting a house--both inside and out--costs between $4,500 and $7,500.
