You have the time, ability, resources, and help to get the job done quickly and safely. If you’re looking to save money (and deep dive into a DIY project), you should consider tackling the house painting project yourself. Keep in mind that DIY paint projects are best for homes with little to no prep or repair work.

Interior carpentry projects for existing homes are different than new construction carpentry jobs.
If your home does contain lead paint, your painting contractors legally need to take precautions when removing it. These containment procedures may include sealing off the rest of the home, wearing respirators to avoid inhaling the lead, disposing of the clothes worn while removing the lead paint, and using special filtration systems and post-removal cleaning procedures to remove all lead particles. A: Most homes that were built before 1978 were painted using lead paint. A simple lab test can prove if your paint contains lead. Some painting contractors in Sonoma County will test for lead paint, and lead paint tests are available at most hardware stores. A: As with may home improvement projects, it is possible to paint your home yourself. If the area you want to paint is small or you have experience painting, you may be up for tackling the job yourself. However, painting can be time-intensive, messy work. And depending on the size of your project, you may be wise to hire a professional to do the job. Professional painters already have the knowledge, skill and the tools to do the job right. Most will also guarantee their work, so you’ll be more assured of getting a quality paint job that lasts. A: With paint, the old saying usually holds true: You get what you pay for. Top-quality paints are more expensive, but they often have better ingredients that allow them to go on smoother, be more durable and last longer than cheap paint. Over the long run, you’ll have to repaint less frequently and your home will look better between painting, meaning you may save more money by spending a little more at the outset. A: Exterior and interior paint is labeled according to its sheen and gloss. The higher the sheen, the more light reflects off of the paint and the glossier, or shinier, it appears. Your choice of paint will depend on the area and surface you’re painting, the color of paint you’ve chosen and the need to clean the painted surface and hide imperfections. Matte and flat paints have very little to no sheen. They are generally used on walls and ceilings and are best for hiding imperfections in the surface. Eggshell finish has a slight sheen and has a lustrous appearance. It is often used on interior walls. Satin and silk finish paints have a finish that is in between that of eggshell and semigloss. They are easier to clean than flat paint. Semi-gloss finish is a shinier, glossier paint. It is easy to clean and resists staining. However, the glossier a finish is, the more likely it is that imperfections in the paint will be obvious. A: Painting contractors base their prices on a number of factors—the cost of labor, the time needed for surface preparation and needed repairs, the quality of paint applied and the number of coats needed. Cheaper bids may reflect a lower quality of work or less experienced painters. However, it’s smart to question the contractors when one bid is much lower or much higher than the other bids you’ve received to make sure the painting company is bidding on the same work. .

A wide range of paint brands can be a good fit for your interior painting project, each with its own cost range and set of colors. Depending on the brand and the type of finish you choose, your interior paint cost per gallon will be between $10 and $93 for flat paint, $11 and $65 for eggshell paint, $12 and $70 for satin paint, $12 and $68 for semi-gloss paint, and $17 and $70 for high-gloss paint. Typically, every brand offers a high-quality and a mid-range paint and many colors and finishes from which you can choose. Depending on which one you choose, you can estimate your overall indoor paint prices per gallon.
Average-sized townhouses cost between $4,813 and $13,750 to paint. A townhouse may have two or three floors and often sports a rather narrow width compared to traditional single-family homes. Painting the exterior of a two-story or three-story structure usually costs more because it takes extra effort to reach the top floors. Still, one of the perks of living in a townhouse is that the exterior only includes the front and the back since the sides are shared walls with other townhouses. Shared walls may offset the added labor cost required to paint the upper stories.

These are just a handful of the factors we take into consideration when pricing interior painting for our customers. This is why when customers sometimes ask our “Price per Square foot,” the answer isn’t always that simple. We provide custom painting proposals that fit your home exactly, as opposed to just applying a cookie cutter price and hoping it fits the job.
This, of course, set me on a path of envy (such are the hazards of Instagram) that led to planning a paint makeover for my own house. Here are 10 surprising things I learned about painting your house. 1. The best time to paint the exterior? Depends. Allow your first coat of paint to dry completely. According to Behr, you’ll need to wait at least two hours in between coats. Don’t be tempted to reuse paint-covered brushes or rollers. Start fresh to ensure your second coat goes on as smoothly as the first.

Highly recommend! We will use Kelly Brothers of Reno again! Milo, Justin, Kenya & Brian were fantastic! We had our medical practice painted during the pandemic. They understood we needed the office painted quickly, and when patients were not in the office. They finished the job in 3 1/2 days working late night hours to accommodate our needs! We would go in after dinner to help move equipment & got to know each of these hard working guys! Each of them said several times, “Thank you for choosing Kelly Brother’s & let us know if we missed anything! We want you to be happy!” By far the best customer service. The job looks GREAT, from the ceiling lines down to the trim and working unbelievable hours into late night. They cleaned up every night! Quality well worth the money!! Thank you!!

Before painting your house, make sure your surfaces are clean from dirt and dust. We know you’re eager to start painting, but removing these particles with a simple rag or tack cloth can help ensure a smooth surface, and keep the protection materials in place.

A professional interior painting contractor should be willing to provide a breakdown of your costs so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. They’ll also be able to advise you on ways to reduce your costs. For example: Instead of making a dramatic color change, a single coat of the same or similar color can give you a fresh, polished look for less. You may avoid the need for primer, which is an additional expense. If you want to paint one wall of a room for a punch of color, choosing the wall with the most windows and doors can save you money, as you’re painting less wall space. Re-evaluate the need to paint trim. You might still get the effect you want without it. If you’ve fallen in love with a color from a “designer” brand of paint, consider a less expensive option. You’re likely to get a close or even perfect match. If your walls need repairs, consider making them yourself.

In addition, Alabaster is an off-white option that works well to modernize exterior brick and traditional clapboard siding. This classic color contrasts beautifully with darker toned roof shingles, navy shutters, black trim colors, or charcoal front doors.

If you start to paint too early in the morning, the home may still be holding moisture from the overnight dew. Aim to paint in the late morning if the dew-point is high. This gives the dew time to dry but the heat will still be rising for several hours.

If you decide to paint your ranch house, you will pay between $5,950 and $17,000. If you look at a ranch house from the top, it should look like an "L" or "U" shape. They're a common sight in suburban environments. They were prevalent in the subdivisions built in the 1950s and after the close of World War II. Design experts recommend a neutral exterior color with a bright and complementary accent color when painting your ranch house.
