SANTA ROSA — When Mike Chavez was introduced to the painting trade by the father of a friend, he had little idea he was being primed for a permanent profession. “My buddy’s dad was a painter, and I worked for him during the summers in high school,” he recounts. “I remember leaving a jobsite one day, looking over the finished product as I drove away, and feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride. After high school, I worked for a couple of different painting contractors until I decided to get my license and start my own business.”
.
Location is also a major price factor as those in rural or remote areas do pay cheaper prices. Charging by the hour costs about $25 for labor on basic jobs and up to $50 for large painting jobs; excluding materials. Getting materials like brushes, tarps, paint, and rollers generally cost extra. Prepare to pay about $20 to $75 for a gallon of paint, based on the paint quality. The common paint brands for home use include Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams.
To estimate the amount of paint you'll need for the trim, estimate the length of total trim. The average trim width is six inches. Multiply the total trim length by 0.5 feet. To estimate the gutter, determine the total length of the gutter. One linear foot of gutter approximates one square foot. TIP: As a rule, one gallon of paint will cover trim and gutters per eight gallons of body paint.
Follow these steps to prepare the exterior and create an ideal surface for a long-lasting paint job: Cover surrounding plants and water features with drop cloths. Remove them daily to prevent damaging the plants. Hand clean or pressure wash all paintable surfaces. Scrape off loose and flaking paint and fill any holes or dents with caulk. Repair and sand any damaged siding. Remove old caulk from windows and door trim and replace with paintable exterior caulk. Allow all surfaces to dry. Prime bare areas or the entire surface if needed. Allow each coat to dry before painting the next coat. HomeGuide Exterior Painting Pro Survey - 48 Professionals. (2021). Craftsman National Estimator Cloud. (2021). We started Partnership Painting Inc in 1984, and we are your Premiere Pasadena painting company. We met in elementary school and learned about professional painting from Scott's father, a high school industrial arts teacher, who painted houses in Los Angeles during the summers. We learned not only how to paint but the value of painting - whether it is a small residential project or a large commercial building - we paint projects as if they are our own! Since starting Partnership Painting Inc, we have completed over 8,000 painting jobs.
We love classics in an old home. A crisp, fresh white in an old home looks anything but boring. In fact, it can help beautiful trim work stand out more. We also like using classic accent colors to bring out detail work or lines on porches, eaves and gables. The right charcoal grey on the exterior of an old home can update it from shabby to stately. And updating that avocado green to a more modern sage can bring new life into an old washroom.
Painters charge $20 to $50 per hour on average, with specialty projects like murals ranging from $70 to $100 an hour. Most professional painters charge by the project or square foot rather than hourly rates.
Generally speaking, a gallon of paint covers 400 sq.ft. of space, which is approximately the size of an average living room. When estimating how much paint to buy, remember that you may need more than a single coat and perhaps a primer, too.
My partner and I are skim coating the texture out of our 2100 sqft home. We probably watched the same videos! and as intimidated as I was to star t, even after finishing just the first room, we have a pretty good handle on how to make it work. Unless you can easily afford to have someone else do it, I think it’s a forgiving enough project for even the most novice homeowner.

Prior to talking with local painters in person or over the phone, you’ll want to decide on the details of your upcoming painting project. For example, have an idea of the areas you want painted, the color scheme you’re looking for and the timeline you want. Think about these questions to get you started: Which areas of my home need to be painted (i.e. interior room painting, exterior painting, kitchen painting, bedroom painting, new paint throughout the house)? Are there any changes or repairs I’d like to have made before the contractors start the job (such as repairing moulding and trim, patching wall damage, texturizing walls, or installing new windows and doors)? Do I want to stick with the same basic color scheme, or do I want bold paint or a drastic color change? Do I plan to live in this home long-term? Or is this a house I plan to sell or a rental property? What personal and professional characteristics would I like my Sonoma County painting contractor to have?
