Old homes really need the expertise of a professional to get the best painted finish. Professional painters and painting companies not only understand the challenges of painting in older homes, they also understand how to problem solve when they are—inevitably—surprised by something they just haven’t seen before.

We have used Kelly Bros. numerous times over the last 10 years from water damage, interior custom painting to exterior staining. They have bent over backwards to meet deadlines. They are timely and tidy. Alisa is so professional and organized. In a recent project Diego supervised and made sure the job was understood and was completed to my satisfaction. I am so happy with Kelly Bros. work ethic and will continue to use them in all future projects and will not hesitate to recommend them.

After you fill in all the holes and cracks, primer becomes even more important. The primer will prevent flashing or a shiny spot on the wall, which occurs when paint is placed directly on spackling.

While you don’t need a permit from your city or county, do you need permission from your homeowner’s association? If you’re in an HOA, check its bylaws about paint colors and schemes. My experience with this team was smooth and painless from the beginning. I was able to get an estimate appointment for exterior painting fairly quickly, and James arrived on time and gave me a sense of confidence with the company. Unlike other estimators who simply looked around the property and then tell me to look out for the estimate via email, James took some time to present the company's credentials and explain what the process would be like. He presented references and documents showing they were up to date on their workers comp insurance, and photos of the work in progress to demonstrate the process. It's old school, but I do appreciate it.

If you're painting your ceilings you'll want to paint them before you start the walls. Using your brush, cut-in a straight line where the ceiling meets the walls or, if there's crown molding, where the ceiling meets the trim. If you're also painting the walls and/or crown molding you can actually overlap the paint onto the adjacent surfaces since you'll be covering it up later. Make certain you keep your brush wet to avoide any drag marks on your finish caused by dry bristles.
3. Have a plan. How are you going to clean the machine? Do you have a mental route of the space mapped out that takes into account the hose, machine placement, the paint bucket, etc? Do you need to protect the floor or windows from overspray? Having an idea of all the steps you need to take to get things done will save time.
