The average cost to paint a house depends on several variables, but the biggest one is size. The cost to paint the exterior of a 1,500 square-foot home will naturally be lower than the cost to paint a 6,000 square-foot home. A starting point of around $1,000 is a safe bet. But if your home has multiple stories or has old paint that needs to be scraped, you can expect to pay more.
Q: I’ve been hearing a lot about low-VOC and no-VOC paints. What are they? Should I consider using them? A: VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that emit potentially harmful gasses when applied and over time. Paint, lacquer, varnish, paint thinners and paint strippers often contain these chemicals. In recent years, paints with lower concentrations of these toxic compounds have become available. There are also some paint brands that offer products with no VOC content. These natural paints and finishes are durable, cost effective and less harmful. Talk with your painting contractor and ask if they are familiar with low-VOC paints and whether they would recommend them for your home.
Paint is an easy way to update any home. When you want to refresh your home, clean up old walls, or brighten a room, paint is a fairly simple choice. While you can paint one room at a time, it’s going to be more expensive and time-consuming. Also, if you’re creating a new “color story” in your home, it is best to paint the entire interior at the same time.
These people are GREAT. They scraped all the peeling paint, put primer on the exposed wood, and then painted the siding, shutters, and all the trim work, and furnished the paint. They even gave me an additional 10% Senior Citizen Discount. Homeowners who want one or more rooms finished during a single painting job can benefit from estimating the cost on the number of rooms and size of the rooms being painted. As a general rule of thumb, it will cost anywhere from $250 to $400 per room to have them painted; however, the more rooms you need painted in a single job, the less the cost per room will be in the end. For example, if you have 5 bedrooms that need painting in a single job, you will pay less per room than if you had only 1 bedroom that needed to be painted. It is therefore more cost effective to have multiple rooms painted in a single job, since you will save money in the long run.

Another way that homeowners can calculate the cost of house painting is by the average cost per hour or per day. Professional painters have rates that vary between around $35 and $45 per hour for the average home; this price per hour does not include the cost for paint and materials, however, which will need to be added into the total cost. The average cost per hour will also vary depending on the type of painting that needs to be done; exterior painting, for instance, costs more than interior painting on average.
This may seem obvious, but if it’s possible to bring any of the painted surfaces inside, do so. For example, if you’re painting a door, it’s better to remove it and set up a painting area inside instead.
Cost will be on the lower end of the range when less preparation and repair is needed. They’ll be on the higher end for small homes and when more prep and repair is needed.
Bungalow surrounded in greenery. This paint color might be grey and the greenery gives it a green tinge. Unique color.
These are some great tips for painting the outside of a home. Our home is old, and the color on its exterior shows it. I like how you talked about hiring a painter. I can see why asking for multiple references would be a good idea to see if the painter knows his stuff! CJ Holmskovec Sonali Patel May 24, 2018 Sara James April 24, 2018
Tony is a magician with a paintbrush and a roller. I bought the Painter For A Day promotion back in the Fall and finally scheduled my day for mid-April (my own doing). Tony transformed my daughter’s bright blue room into a serene, whitish-blue getaway. With tall ceilings and some tricky corners, Tony did it by himself all in less than 8 hours. I highly recommend Kelly Brothers Painting as they do great work and also have a great company culture of giving back to employees and the community. I am looking forward to having them back to paint the rest of my house both inside and out!
