wow – I’ve never done any sort of intense painting like that before (as a renter) but it just goes to show that there is so much to consider that I wouldn’t have thought of. Thank you for laying out these steps like this!
While tipping house painters is neither expected nor required, you may want to do so, especially if they exceeded your expectations in any way or went above and beyond for the job. How much? Some advocate tipping 15 to 2o percent, but on a $5,000 bill, that adds up to a whole lot. I like this advice I found in a Washington Post story better: It recommends a $10 to $20 tip, plus a glowing online review. “Even better than a tip, however, would be to give the painter a positive review on Yelp, HomeAdvisor or similar websites. And consider providing breakfast (coffee and doughnuts) or a pizza lunch for the crew.”
.
You’re likely excited to pick a color and see your room come to life, but like all of our paint advice, we want you to always consider prep first. An older home usually requires a different approach to prep than a newer home.

The cost will vary a lot depending on who you decide to hire to do the job. There are lots of companies out there who tout great results but end up providing sub-par work.

There were a couple things that needed to be done before I even started thinking about painting. Since the house was built in 1921, I wanted to check for lead. You can find lead testers in any home improvement store. I followed the directions on the label, did some tests, and found that the house was lead free! That was a relief because removing lead is a huge hassle, requiring professionals, special suits, and more tests. No thank you. If you do happen to test for lead and it shows positive, you can contact the national lead hotline, which should get you on the right track for proper removal. Fortunately we were able to bypass that entire process.
In the same way, it’s wise to include the drive time spent picking up test patches, supplies, and paint. Certainly, all of these tasks add up over a weekend dedicated to painting the house. Before long, it’ll be Sunday night and you’re only halfway through the first room. Looking for a painting company in Saint Louis or St Louis County? Several individual factors impact the overall cost of your painting project, including how many coats of paint you need and the type of paint you are using. As you may have guessed, higher quality paints cost more, but that is not the only thing that affects how much it costs. If you’re planning on going from a light color to a dark color or especially a dark color to a light color, it’s going to take a bit more work and money. Older homes require more prep work, often including drywall 4 or siding repairs.

Make sure you also cover your flooring with your canvas drop cloths to protect them from paint spills, and tape the drops down to the floor along the baseboards to keep them from pulling away from the walls.

While exterior paints cost more, it costs a bit more to paint a home interior versus the exterior. This cost difference is due to the complexity of the different rooms and the number of different spaces that need painting versus a consistent exterior wall. Plus, interiors usually have to be painted by hand or by roller, which is more labor intensive. Exterior paint can be sprayed. It costs approximately $8,700 to paint a home interior and about $5,500 a home exterior.
Blend your roller work into the previously cut-in areas, and do not stop until the entire ceiling has been painted.
